On the morning of February 20, 1998, officers responded to a medical call that involved an adult male suffering a possible heart attack.  Officer Ron Winters along with another officer responded quickly and found the individual not breathing and without a pulse.  The officers quickly began emergency procedures and eventually connected the person to a portable defibrillator.  Because of their action the individual was successfully revived and transported to the hospital for emergency treatment.  This action was one of the first saves, if not the first in the state.  Laerdal Medical Corp. (maker of the defibrillator) was so impressed with the performance of the officers that they awarded a "Certificate of Recognition" to them.
On February 13, 1998, Officer Winters was dispatched to the 4600 block of Poinciana after receiving a call of a possible burglary in progress.  Officer Winters quickly responded to the scene along with other officers and quickly located and arrested the burglary suspect.  By his quick responses and actions, a dangerous situation was brought to a peaceful conclusion without injury or loss of property.  Because of his performance during the month of February, 1998, Officer Ron Winters distinguished himself in an exemplary manner not once but twice.  It is due to his dedication to the community and the department that Officer Ron Winters not only be recognized as our Officer of the Year but also receive the Life Saving Medal for his actions on February 20, 1998.
